I LOVE SKATEBOARD SHOES.

1. Stacy Peralta became the first professional skateboarder to ever be paid by a shoe company for endorsing its product. He received $300 a month from Vans starting in the late ’70s, but never received a signature shoe.
2. Natas Kaupas had the first signature series skate shoe in ’87 on Etnies.
3. Prior to Etnies’ offer to Natas, the brand had approached Claus Grabke, a European pro skater, with the offer. Grabke declined on the offer as he was turned off on the idea itself and the sample designs. As a vegetarian, the use of suede and leather on his shoe was a big turn-off and coupled with unsavory designs, Grabke was not on board with the idea. Had he been more interested, Grabke would have had the first-ever pro model shoe, and most likely the first animal-friendly pro model skate shoe.
4. Ed Templeton had the first vegan pro model shoe with Sheep in ’97. All of his shoes have been vegan-friendly ever since. There were other all-synthetic shoes on the market, but prior to Ed’s none had been designed with that angle in mind. Since Ed’s first, Rick McCrank, Jamie Thomas, Geoff Rowley and Moses Itkonen have all had vegan-friendly shoes as well.

Synthetic
5. The youngest pro to receive a shoe was Ryan Sheckler at 15 on Etnies. Prior to Sheckler, Bastien Salabanzi had been the youngest at 16 with a shoe on Vans.

Ryan Sheckler
6. When Vans gave him a shoe at 53, Tony Alva became the oldest skateboarder to ever receive a pro shoe.
Tony Alva
7. When designing Biebel’s first shoe, the minds at Lakai had an unorthodox feature in mind. “The designers had this idea to put a sound chip in the tongue,” says Kelly Bird, Lakai Brand Manager. “When you pressed down on it, there were three classic Biebel quotes that would play at random.” Due to production issues, the idea got scrapped but as Bird puts it, “It was probably a blessing in disguise.”
BEE BULL(Biebel)
8. At 19 years, the half-Cab has had the longest run of any pro skate shoe. Since its 1991 introduction, the shoe has remained in the line.
9. Elissa Steamer became the first female professional skateboarder with a pro shoe when she landed one on Etnies in ’03.
Elissa Steamer
10. As of fall 2010, Rob Dyrdek will have had 18 pro shoes on DC, the most anyone has ever had on a single company.
11. With 20 different models spanning his career on Emerica (1), Adio (3), Circa (4) and Fallen (12), Jamie Thomas holds the title for most pro shoes.
Emerica (1款), Adio (3款), Circa (4款) and Fallen (12款)
12. Under US law, a company cannot copyright a design, hence the plethora of rereleases and look-alike pro shoes.
13. Molded into the soles of Tim O’Connor’s Savier shoe, “The Story,” there were the words to a short story Tim had written. “I believe I wrote about how God got it all wrong when he designed the human body,” Tim says. The story goes on to offer Tim’s insight on much needed improvements on the human anatomy.
14. Since the Osiris D3, few shoes have caused as big of a stir as Dylan Rieder’s second shoe on Gravis, which looks more like a formal dress shoe than the conventional skate shoe. “It doesn’t look like a skate shoe,” says Dylan. “When I’m at a skatepark kids trip out on them, but that’s what I like about them.” Dylan adds that a lot of skateshops are skeptical to carry the shoe since they’re so different, but the shops that do generally sell out of them.
15. Despite riding for a handful of companies prior to joining up with Adidas, Mark Gonzales had never had a pro shoe until the Three Stripes hooked him up. The Gonz brings a lot of ideas to the table when designing a shoe. One of the designers’ favorites was when Gonz sent in a prototype for his “Pop Toe” design. “It’s a dock sider with plastic cough syrup bottles for the toes,” says Marc Holcomb, Adidas skate product manager. “None of us are exactly sure why, but we’re certain they’re innovative.”
